SEO vs AEO: Do You Still Need Both in 2026?

Half of marketers will tell you AEO killed SEO. The other half will tell you AEO is a buzzword invented to sell retainers. Both are wrong, and running your marketing on either belief will cost you traffic you cannot afford to lose.

The reality is SEO and AEO are not competing strategies. They are two outputs of the same system. You need both in 2026 because your customers now search in two different ways, and each one requires you to win a different part of the results page.

Here is what that actually means.

What is SEO?

Search engine optimization is the practice of getting your pages to rank in traditional search results, the familiar list of blue links. You optimize for keywords, page quality, site structure, and authority so that when someone searches, your page appears high enough to earn the click. The goal of SEO is the click. You win when the searcher lands on your site.

What is AEO?

Answer engine optimization is the practice of getting your business cited inside AI-generated answers: Google's AI Overviews, ChatGPT, Perplexity, and similar tools. Instead of ranking a link for the user to click, you structure your content so the AI extracts it, trusts it, and names your business in the response. The goal of AEO is the citation. You win when the answer references you, even if no click happens at all.

How are SEO and AEO actually different?

They share almost everything and differ only in the last mile. Both depend on the same foundation: a clear entity (search engines and AI both need to understand who you are), well-structured content, topical authority, and trust signals. The difference is what you optimize the final step for.

SEO optimizes to rank a link. AEO optimizes to be extracted as an answer. That changes how you write. AEO rewards content that answers a specific question directly in the first two sentences, defines its terms, and is organized so a machine can lift a clean, self-contained passage. SEO rewards depth, keyword coverage, and the signals that push a page up the ranking.

Most of the work overlaps. The optimization target at the end does not.

Where search is actually going in 2026

The numbers explain why this stopped being optional.

AI Overviews now appear on roughly half of commercial search queries. Estimates range from about 25 percent to 60 percent depending on the study and the keyword set, but the figure most trackers converge on for commercial terms sits near 48 percent, up from about 31 percent a year earlier. Google's AI Mode has grown into the tens of millions of users, and standalone tools like ChatGPT and Perplexity keep climbing.

When an AI Overview appears, organic click-through rates drop sharply, by anywhere from 34 to 61 percent depending on the study. That is the part that scares people. Here is the part they miss: brands cited inside the AI answer earn dramatically more clicks than brands that are not, and the visitors who do come through from AI search tend to be further along and convert better, because the answer already pre-qualified them.

So the traffic did not disappear. It moved. It now rewards the businesses that get cited and quietly punishes the ones that only ranked.

So do local businesses still need SEO?

Yes, and more than most people realize. This is the nuance the "AEO replaced SEO" crowd gets wrong.

AI Overviews trigger far more often on informational queries, the "what is," "how do I," and "why does" questions, than on local and transactional ones. When someone searches "med spa near me" or "emergency dentist Heber City," they are much more likely to see a traditional local pack and blue links than a long AI summary. Those high-intent, ready-to-buy searches are still won with SEO, local optimization, and reviews.

That is exactly why you need both. AEO captures the customer earlier, while they are researching and asking questions. SEO captures them later, when they are ready to book and searching with intent. Drop either one and you go dark for half of your customer's journey.

Most teams miss this

Here is the operator gap. Only about a quarter of marketers currently measure their AI-search visibility at all, while more than half say they plan to start within the next few months. That means right now, in most local markets, almost nobody is optimizing for citations yet.

That is not a threat. That is a window. The businesses that fold AEO into their existing SEO now will own the AI answers in their market before their competitors even start tracking them.

The bottom line

Stop framing this as SEO versus AEO. It is one visibility system with two outputs. The same entity clarity, structured content, and authority that rank your pages are what get you cited in AI answers. You are not choosing between them. You are deciding whether to optimize the last mile for a click, a citation, or both.

In 2026, the answer for any business that wants to be found is both.

JG Collective builds that system end to end, SEO and AEO together, in English and Spanish, so you show up whether your customer is asking a question or ready to buy.
